Hey there! I’m Portia Thaxter, the founder of Intentional Living. My journey to creating this community wasn’t a straight path – it was shaped by years of experiences, both heartwarming and heartbreaking.
For years, I worked as a Research scientist and Health Coach. Every day, I saw how people’s mental health was deeply connected to their physical well-being. But it wasn’t until I lived through the Grenfell disaster that I truly understood the impact of community trauma on our overall health.
In the aftermath of Grenfell, I watched my neighbours struggle not just with the emotional toll, but with the basics of daily life – including access to nutritious food. It hit me hard: how can we expect people to heal mentally when their bodies aren’t getting the nourishment they need?
That’s when the seed of Intentional Living was planted.
In April 2024, I took a leap of faith and set up Intentional Living as a Community Interest Company (CIC). Why a CIC? Because I wanted to create something that would genuinely serve our community, not shareholders.
My background as a biological scientist specialising in human nutrition and public health gave me the knowledge. My experience as a therapist gave me the insight into how to connect with people. And my role as a local councillor? It showed me the power of grassroots change.
Intentional Living isn’t just my project – it’s ours. It’s about all of us coming together to create a healthier, happier community. Whether you join a workshop, volunteer at one of our community gardens, or just spread the word, you’re part of this movement.
Remember, every meal is a chance to nourish your body and mind. Let’s make those chances count, together.
